For me, 2025 was extremely troubling in terms of world events, but quite positive in terms of my musical life. I released my third solo record, received many positive press reviews, did plenty of live performances with my band in the Chicago area, and connected with new audiences.
During this winter of 2026, I'm busy writing new songs for my next album. One of the greatest compliments I received at one of our last live shows in 2025 was: “You guys sound like a real band.” Right now, the guys and I are revamping our live show, including lots of new songs, and everyone's singing backing vocals.
I'm also taking an amazing class at the University of Illinois Chicago, called Wonder Lab: Learning from the Musical Art and Craft of Stevie Wonder. The class is presented by UIC's Department of Race, Diaspora and Indigeneity, and it views Stevie's music, social activism, spirituality, global popularity, and innovations in recording technology from many different perspectives. The participants in the class are a wonderful mix of graduate students and community members of all ages (teens to 80's), including music students, writers, film critics, and people who were activists in the 70's, and I love showing up to class every week… I feel really lucky to be there.
Wishing all of you a Happy 2026,
Nikki
